Seeing Clearly.

Dress: Modcloth.
Anorak: Thrifted.
Red Beret: Target.
Love Ring, Blue ring: Dahlia, Mother.
Loafers: c/o Pink and Pepper.
Lipstick: MAC's Russian Red.
Glasses: c/o Firmoo.

I had to get my first pair of glasses at just six years old when I entered kindergarden. Even at nearly 20 I remember feeling so hesitant about getting them, the only thing consoling me the fact that my first pair had little bugs bunnies on the side of the rims.

I was never teased in school for wearing glasses yet I still resented them. I felt inferior to my classmates and ugly. I would think that my glasses were the reason for my unpopularity and that if I shed them, I would shed the old Lauren, too. So the summer before my 8th grade year I told my mom I wanted to get contacts and I did. I felt like a whole new person and because of that, I changed my style (very loose term) and hair. I entered the 8th grade with confidence in my new look and since my classmates accepted the new found me with such enthusiasm, I always correlated my old, unfashionable self with my glasses.

It's been five years and I haven't put on glasses since. I don't even wear contacts but rather just go about as I am. I've seen different bloggers all over trying out Firmoo glasses and when they sent me an email asking if I wanted to try, too, I was more than hesitant. Why would I ever want to go back to the girl I promised myself I wouldn't be? The one who was uncomfortable with herself and who she was? Why would I want to go back to 'bornin' Lauren?' as I used to call myself.

I thought I might as well give a pair a try though because I haven't anything to lose. So I picked out some frames, put in my prescription, and they were at my door in a week. I told myself I wouldn't look good in them. Talked myself out of ever liking them before they even arrived.

But upon putting these shiny black cat eye frames with slightly round lenses...I didn't think any of that. For the first time in five years I watched that vision of the old Lauren with glasses, who I thought I remembered clearly, fade away and saw that I was just left with myself. My glasses never made me nerdy or uncool or unfashionable. They were a part of me as much as my brown eyes, thick eye brows, and pouty lips. This whole time I equated glasses with the old me and old fears but in reality? My glasses never defined me as a person; they still don't.

Don't ever feel like anything, whether it's glasses, a facial feature, or even clothing defines who you are. You are whatever and whomever you want to be. You've just got to believe it.

Thank you Firmoo for sending me these glasses and helping me see myself differently. If you'd like to try out a pair, Firmoo has a first pair free program you can check out here. Also, if you're unsure of what suits you they have a virtual try on system that I used to pick out my own pair (since it's been so long!)

Have a wonderful weekend, guys.

With much love, Lauren.

Oh my goodness you look so gorgeous in those frames. They fit you so well.

I can relate with you, I needed glasses all of my school career but refused to get any because of how people in glasses are perceived. It wasn't until I was 18 that I actually got glasses. Now, I'm looking for better frames, ones that fit my face better, but it is wonderful seeing clearly. Feels like everything is in HD.

I think it is great that you have braved wearing glasses again. I have worn glasses since first school so about 6 or 7 years old. I have been bullied all through my school (and most of my adult life) because of that I tried contacts as at one point a lad who was on the same hospital ward as me kept on taking my glasses from me. The contacts didn't work as when they optitions trailed them I nearly kicked them as they tried to remove them, needless to say they where a n non starter! I cannot as you do go without glasses or contacts, as I really do need them and I couldn't read, drive or do pretty much anything without them.

Please wear them or other frames with your prescription in again, as it is great to see people who don't feel like they have to hide from wearing glasses or that they cannot be fashionable when wearing glasses. There are those of us out there who need glasses and cannot do without and it is so great to be able to see other people wearing glasses confidently and in a positive light.

Gosh after all that, thank you for this post and thank you for wearing the glasses :)

Who knew that a pair of glasses could cause such an epiphany? Beautiful post Lauren! I love how your blog is one of the few that successfully combines such personal writing and beautiful style.

As for your outfit--I love that pretty dress and those cute flats! I've always wanted a pair with tassels haha.

I feel bad for people who are made fun of for glasses--that's just so dumb. I've thankfully never had to wear glasses (thankful for convenience reasons--I actually like myself in glasses). Honestly these glasses are so adorable and flattering on you :) I'm so glad you found a pair that you like!

Those glasses look WONDERFUL on you, my dear!! So pretty and chic. It's amazing how glasses are now considered fashionable and pretty. I've worn glasses since early middle school (maybe 5th grade, but I think 6th), and I got braces at the same time, so I was VERY self-conscious about my "ugly" (awkward) phase. I do still wear glasses, though I mostly wear my contacts. And I still don't really feel pretty when I wear them, but I am okay with how I look in them. I've been wanting to check out Firmoo for a while. So glad you had a positive experience, and that you can see your beauty clearly now even with your glasses!

Glasses aren't anything to be uncomfortable nowadays - they're such a chic accessory! And so handy, too! I love my contacts, but I still see better in glasses + they're more comfortable. I looooove my thick, black tinned pair. <3

You look so cute in these photos! I can't wait to see more pics of you in your lovely glasses.

Love your red lips against your beret! I started wearing glasses age 6 and about 5 years back finally got rid of them with lasik! Love the feeling of not needing to frantically search for glasses every morning, but miss them every time I see girls with cute glasses, like you.

I personally think you look amazin' in glasses. It's definitely a different look for you, but in a good way. I'm glad that you found a pair from Firmoo that fit your face...all of the ones I tried were hideous! Also I still love this dress and those photos. I got glasses in 1st grade...so I feel your pain. Now I love mine.

You look so great with glasses! I got my glasses in 4th grade and I didn't really like them either. But, now I don't think that I would look right without glasses. I absolutely love my Firmoo glasses - I wear them more than the ones that I got from my eye doctors!

You look lovely in glasses! In all three photos at the top :)

I've worn glasses since about age 8, and luckily have never been teased. And actually, I've never felt they hold me back. I was never popular at school, but that was because I was different (in a good way!) not because of my specs :P I sometimes wear contacts, but hardly ever.

I'm glad you accept them as part of yourself now :)

I love firmoo. hehe. I own a pair that they sent me for a review back in September. You are adorable and I am so glad to hear you've never been teased or mocked for wearing glasses.
