American Thanksgiving.

Hello there! ♥
Back from holiday I am and gosh was it a good one. It hit me on actual Thanksgiving that next year, I won't get an American Thanksgiving. I won't get pumpkin pie, I won't get snow, I won't get a cozy fire, and I certainly won't get my family. I'll be home from Italy in time for Christmas next year, but not for Thanksgiving and that thought really hit me hard. Being in college away from family is hard enough, but to not get to spend this holiday that is about family with them will be ever more tough. It just made me all the more thankful to get to spend it with them this year.

Things were perfect. Not in the sense of real perfection but perfect in my eyes. Of course there were family squabbles, some food didn't turn out right, and I'm a holiday grump like always--but despite all that, I wouldn't have Thanksgiving any different. It's the kind of Thanksgiving that I've always grown up with; a very mid-western, traditional, American Thanksgiving with all of the appropriate quirks both sides of my family add. It can't be a family holiday without at least one crazy, drunk great-aunt (not kidding).

My little sister and I snuck out of the festivities to take these photos. She leaves me speechless. At ten years old there's nothing she can't excel at. I was the awkward, uncoordinated kid growing up who wasn't really good at anything. But Gracie can pretty much pick up any activity and do it perfectly first try. She's always begging to take outfit photos for me, and after she took these I'm convinced that she can take my photos for the rest of my blogging existence. They turned out better than I can take them--gosh dang her.

I've still got a few more days at home before it's time to go back to college again. Soaking in every moment! x

With much love, Lauren.

So glad to hear that you had a happy Thanksgiving. This winter look simply stunning--your makeup is so pretty and I love the red and gray mix. Your sister is so talented! Boy, am I jealous that she begs you to take photos. My younger brother takes most of my photos, but I usually have to drag him along since he knows I'm pretty much helpless without him haha.

Aww Lauren, you look beautiful. I love the idea of layering something cozy like a poncho over a fancier dress! It totally works here. I've never been away from my family for Thanksgiving (and at least you'll be back for Christmas), but so many of my friends are on national tours of musicals or working on cruise ships, and they don't get to spend the holidays with their families. I think you will probably end up having your own Thanksgiving with other students over there, and you'll make it very memorable (and feel grown up and cook things on your own or something)!

I just found your blog because I love Modcloth and see your photos on their Style Gallery all the time, so I followed one over here and I like what I see! Good for you in teaching younger girls to love the skin they're in, and also for being a Christian inspiration in your hometown, on your college campus, and on the internet! I wanted to tell you that my husband and I were living in Kyrgyzstan for 2 years and Turkey for 1 year with our children and missed out on the holidays back home, but it gave us the opportunity to teach what an American Thanksgiving is all about to the people there. It was a beautiful time, we cooked all the traditional food and introduced them to our foreign friends, and told them why we were thankful to be there. Take this chance to spread the joy and you won't regret it!

I remember I was abroad (in London!) during Easter, and I was dreading it-- thinking it'd be awful away from my family & usual traditions. Instead, all of my friends and I got together and cooked a big potluck meal & spent the whole night talking about what we were grateful for (even though it was easter-- we were feeling grateful!) and it's one of my favorite memories. I've had many more Easters at home since then, and I still look back at that one so fondly :) Can't wait to hear all about your time abroad, it truly will be transformative I'm sure!
